What will I learn?
In the CIOPORA Academy webinar series in September 2020, three UPOV experts elaborate on the technical aspects of the UPOV regime important to plant breeders.
Webinar 1:
INTRODUCTION: You will learn about UPOV and its role in the international system of Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBRs) and statistics on numbers of PBR grants. The role of the UPOV Office and how breeders and applicants can become involved in the work of UPOV will be explained.
You will receive an explanation and demonstration of PLUTO, the plant variety database, and UPOV’s website which contains important information for breeders and applicants. Who is testing what species, where can I apply and which countries have established cooperation?
DUS EXAMINATIONS & PLANT CHARACTERISTICS: The expert speakers will share their knowledge on plant characteristics including the types of characteristics and their usefulness for the DUS decision. Why are not all characteristics important in breeding suitable as DUS characteristics? How are characteristics observed and how can the method of observation influence the quality of the decision? How do different countries harmonize their use of characteristics? The use of disease resistance characteristics will be explained.
