What will I learn?
Part 1: Technical Introduction to New Breeding Techniques (NBT) and Other Technologies Leading to Potential Essentially Derived Varieties (EDV) by Dr. Ellen de Keyser, ILVO Plant, Belgium
Mutagenesis, or genome doubling, is still most mentioned as EDV inducing technologies. However, nowadays new technologies are arising that can induce mutations with surgical precision, the so-called “New Breeding Techniques” (NBTs). But what makes NBT so different from commonly used mutation breeding? In Europe, NBT derived plants are to be considered GMOs, hence also the differences from the current GM technologies will be explained. Also, less known molecular breeding techniques are available to create an interesting new diversity of genotypes, without the hurdle of being GM plants. In this webinar, a brief technical explanation will be given on the most important new technologies. Some case studies will be included to demonstrate the huge value and the benefits breeding companies can get when using these techniques. It will be explained why such techniques may lead to the creation of EDVs.
Part 2: Legal Aspects of Essentially Derived Variety (EDV) Concept by Tjeerd Overdijk, Vondst Advocaten, The Netherlands
During this session, the speaker will take you through the five W’s concerning Essentially Derived Varieties (EDVs), all from a legal perspective: What is an EDV? Why do we need the PVR to extend to EDVs? When is a variety considered an EDV? Who can claim entitlement to an EDV? What else is Worth knowing in relation to EDVs? The theoretical basics will be blended with the speaker’s own experience with actual court cases concerning the concept and observations on practical application and importance of EDV rules.

MEET THE SPEAKERS
Dr. ir. Ellen De KeyserSenior Researcher at ILVO Plant, Belgium

Dr. ir. Ellen De Keyser
Ellen graduated from Ghent University and started her career at ILVO in 2000. Over the course of her academic career, she has been involved in different projects on molecular genetics in azalea, including the development and implementation of several molecular marker techniques. She obtained her PhD (Ghent University) in 2010 on the interaction of phenotype, genotype and gene expression for flower colour and other plant quality traits in azalea. During her PhD, she became an expert in RT-qPCR optimization and analysis for gene expression studies. As such, she is responsible for the set-up of all RT-qPCR projects at ILVO-Plant. She is currently a Senior Researcher at ILVO – Plant Sciences Unit – Applied Genetics and Breeding and is involved in projects on molecular genetics and genomics in several field crops and ornamental plants. Currently, Ellen is working on implementation of the CRISPR/Cas technology in the framework of the ILVO research program. Recently, she has also become one of the contact persons for the open innovation platform of Living Lab Plant.
Tjeerd Overdijk studied Law at Leiden University and has been a lawyer since 1984. With over 25 years of experience, he is an all-rounder in the field of Intellectual Property with a special interest in Plant Variety Rights. He was involved in the world’s first court case on the concept of Essentially Derived Varieties (EDVs) and he has gained considerable experience on this subject. He also has experience with litigation before the Board of Appeal of the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. Tjeerd is a member of various professional associations, including CIOPORA, the Netherlands Copyright Association, the AIPPI, INTA, MARQUES and the European Communities Trademarks Association (ECTA).
