Prof. Steven J. Knapp

Prof. Steven J. Knapp

Prof. Steven J. Knapp
UC Davis

Steven J. Knapp is Distinguished Professor and Director of the Strawberry Breeding Program , Department of Plant Sciences, University of California, Davis.  He is an expert on plant breeding, quantitative genetics, and genomics and has extensive experience with single-cross hybrid breeding systems in heterotic species.  His past research primarily focused on the breeding, genetics, and genomics of sunflower, peanut, and industrial oilseeds.  His current research focuses on strawberry, with emphases on developing high-yielding disease resistant cultivars, breeding and genetics of fruit quality and shelf-life traits, the development of genomic and bioinformatic resources, and the application of genome-informed breeding approaches in strawberry.  He was previously Global Director of Vegetable Breeding Technology at Monsanto (2009-2015), Professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and Graduate Program Coordinator in the Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics at the University of Georgia (2004-2009), and Professor and Paul C. Berger Endowed Chair at Oregon State University (1985-2004).  He teaches Quantitative Genetics at UC Davis (2015-Present) and previously taught Advanced Plant Breeding and Quantitative Genetics at OSU (1985-2004).

Webinar Syllabus:

The strawberry breeding program at the
University of California, Davis (UCD) has been the driving force behind a Green
Revolution in California.  Using archaeogenomic prediction (tracking the
timing and order of the occurrence and subsequent selection of mutations) and
extensive on-farm testing of modern cultivars, we show that genetic gains for
yield have been in the 636 to 2,974% range in the UCD breeding program.
These genetic gains were achieved, however, using chemically intensive
high-input production practices, e.g., losses to diseases caused by soil-borne
pathogens were virtually eliminated following the introduction of the
ozone-depleting fumigant methyl bromide (now banned).  A second Green
Revolution is needed to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable
path forward for the strawberry industry.  With this lecture you will
learn from a practical approach how genome-informed and other predictive
breeding methods are being used to develop a new generation of highly
productive, disease resistant cultivars to achieve that goal.

Dr. Robert Boehm

Dr. Robert Boehm

Head of Molecular Breeding, Tissue Culture & Phytopathology at Klemm + Sohn GmbH & Co. KG/ Selecta One, Germany

After studying biology in Freiburg i. Breisgau (1988-1994), Robert Boehm obtained his Ph.D. at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology, the University of Tübingen (Prof. Dr. Lutz Heide, 1999). He wrote his dissertation on metabolic engineering approaches to plant-derived therapeutic substances. In 1999, he joined Prof. Heide Schnabl’s group at the Institute of Plant Molecular Physiology and Biotechnology, Bonn University, to develop duckweed as an expression system for recombinant therapeutic proteins (molecular farming). To expand his expertise in plant biotechnology, he then spent some time at the Institute of Glycobiology at Oxford University as well as at the Institute of Agricultural Genetics in Hanoi/Viet Nam. Dr. Boehm is an expert in plant transformation and in vitro-culture and has worked as a lecturer at the Universities of Bonn and Dortmund.

In 2007, Dr. Robert Boehm joined Ornamental Bioscience GmbH as an R&D Manager. The company aimed to develop genetically engineered ornamental plants with improved tolerances against biotic and abiotic stress. In 2012, the company was taken over by Klemm + Sohn GmbH, a part of the Selecta one group. Selecta one is a leading breeder, producer, and marketer of vegetatively propagated ornamental plants worldwide. Here, Robert Boehm is heading the group´s central laboratory facility in Stuttgart, which includes plant pathogen diagnostic, in vitro culture, and biotechnological research.

The CIOPORA Breeding Academy is an education program designed specifically for plant breeders and R&D departments of the breeding companies. It provides advanced training in the latest breeding technologies, including New Breeding Techniques (NBT).

Webinar Syllabus:
Climate change has become a reality that impacts especially agriculture and the generation of food and feed. But also in the horticultural sector, there is a growing demand to prepare for the consequences of climate change.

This webinar will provide an overview of existing activities and future strategies to cope with climate change in the breeding of ornamentals. This encompasses not only the intensified breeding efforts for abiotic stress tolerance but also the development and selection of naturally stress-adapted plant species as new players on the market. In addition to crop adaptation to climate change, breeding companies can also contribute by implementing innovative technologies to reduce their CO2 footprint, finally becoming climate neutral.

What will I learn?

Companies grow their global presences, and an increasing number of employees not only work cross-jurisdiction but also remotely from their homes. Questions of ownership and remuneration of employees’ inventions become more complex – and we see significant differences across the globe. While in Switzerland employee inventors rarely are entitled to compensation in addition to agreed salaries, in Germany an additional remuneration is the standard. The amount of which is still often disputed; we regularly read about employees awarded significant payments by courts, as their invention turns out to be particularly successful. In addition, survey show that invention reward policies enhance innovation.

While focusing in particular on Switzerland, Germany, Italy, China, Hong Kong and the US, we will guide you through the global “jungle” of remuneration schemes and invention reward options, provide insights into how employee inventor compensation is calculated and outline the pitfalls you should be aware of.
