Computomics

Dr. Sebastian J. Schultheiss, Managing Director of Computomics, founded Computomics together with a very experienced board of scientific advisors from ETH Zurich, Max Planck Institute for Biology and the University of Tübingen. Sebastian studied Bioinformatics at University of Michigan and Tübingen. He worked on Machine Learning research and its application to biological data for his PhD degree at the Max Planck Institute for Biology and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory. He brings startup experience, bioinformatics skills and machine learning expertise to Computomics.

Computomics brings superior prediction accuracy and unprecedented integration of phenotyping, genotyping, management, and environmental data to agriculture, enabling its clients to produce stable, value-added crops.

Webinar Syllabus:

Machine Learning or AI can include dominance, epistasis, and there is no restrictions on the dimensionality of the interactions. It has been successfully applied across many industries and we show how it’s possible to benefit from it in plant breeding with a breeder-centered approach to combine or complement the advantages of machine learning.

Genomic Prediction with its linear mixed models has proven to be a very successful tool for breeding of a variety of crops. The assumptions made by these methods, for instance that the effects of markers or environmental covariates is equal, are a shortcut and not biologically true.

Key topics include the identification of the most useful environmental datasets, the determination of optimal or prediction of future environments, the necessary datasets to get started, and current success cases and studies using machine learning methods.

Dr. Martina Juranić

Dr. Martina Juranić

Senior Researcher at Plant Breeding, Wageningen University and Research, The Netherlands

Dr. Martina Juranić has started her scientific career at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, where she obtained her Ph.D. in 2013, followed by a postdoctoral training and Researcher position at CSIRO, Australia. In 2020, she joined the Ornamentals, Tissue Culture and Gene Technology group at Plant Breeding, WUR, Netherlands. Her research expertise comes from the field of sexual and asexual plant reproduction of different plant species, with the ultimate goal of utilizing this knowledge to advance breeding of crop plants. Currently, she is working to develop and implement new plant breeding techniques and related technologies in tissue culture, as well as to advance general tools specific for ornamentals.

The CIOPORA Breeding Academy is an education program designed specifically for plant breeders and R&D departments of the breeding companies. It provides advanced training in the latest breeding technologies, including New Breeding Techniques (NBT).

Webinar Syllabus: Plant biotechnology can be defined in many ways but in this webinar, the emphasis will be on plant tissue culture and transformation techniques.

The tissue culture technique enables the growth and maintenance of plant cells, tissues, organs, embryos, protoplasts, or seeds in a sterile and controlled environment. It has been in practical use since the 1970s and allows rapid production of many identical offspring (clones) of one plant, also called micropropagation. This type of asexual propagation is of importance for a large number of ornamental plants and trees like navel oranges, which were obtained by mutagenesis or are unable to reproduce sexually through seeds. This webinar will also provide an overview of other applications of tissue culture for the breeding of horticulture plants, such as disease elimination; anther/pollen culture for the production of haploid plants; protoplast isolation for hybrid production; embryo culture, and synthetic seed production. In the era of genome editing, transformation techniques beyond the widely-applied Agrobacterium-based protocols will also be discussed.

What will I learn?

Companies grow their global presences, and an increasing number of employees not only work cross-jurisdiction but also remotely from their homes. Questions of ownership and remuneration of employees’ inventions become more complex – and we see significant differences across the globe. While in Switzerland employee inventors rarely are entitled to compensation in addition to agreed salaries, in Germany an additional remuneration is the standard. The amount of which is still often disputed; we regularly read about employees awarded significant payments by courts, as their invention turns out to be particularly successful. In addition, survey show that invention reward policies enhance innovation.

While focusing in particular on Switzerland, Germany, Italy, China, Hong Kong and the US, we will guide you through the global “jungle” of remuneration schemes and invention reward options, provide insights into how employee inventor compensation is calculated and outline the pitfalls you should be aware of.
