In November 2019, the CIOPORA Academy program on IP for plants will be extended with the distance learning offerrings in form of webinars. Each webinar will be conducted in two sessions to cover all time zones enabling participation from all locations worldwide.

What will I learn?

In this webinar, we will provide an overview of the Trademark protection regime in China, covering topics including:

  1. the registration and prosecution system, plant variety denomination issue, filing strategies, registrability, actions against bad faith filings;
  2. investigation and enforcement options such as negotiations, customs seizures, online notice and take-down procedures, administrative actions, civil litigations and criminal sanctions;
  3. Trademark licensing arrangements with Chinese business partners.

The webinar will focus on practical challenges faced by plant breeders in Trademark protection in China and discuss useful tips and best practices to protect your plant varieties by Trademarks.

Two sessions of the webinar will be held to enable participation in all time zones. The sessions are scheduled in China Standard Time (Beijing time, 北京时间 ) to match the speaker’s time zone.

Andrew Sim

Office Lead for Consumer Goods and Retail Industry, Baker McKenzie
Mr Sim is the Office Lead for Consumer Goods and Retail Industry in the Beijing Office of Baker McKenzie. His practice area includes product recall, consumer complaints, franchise registration, product quality issues, and breaches of advertiser regulations. Mr Sim heads the Food and Beverage (“F&B”) Industry practice group and leads the Plant Variety Rights practice, including investigations, PBR registration and enforcement. Mr Sim also focuses on IP protection and enforcement in China, assisting clients with IPR strategies and licensing as well as directing anti-counterfeit operations. His practice also includes domain names, Internet and technology laws.
